Diabetes - Getting started - Taking Control

Overview of the Management of Diabetes

Lifestyle Factors

In order to manage diabetes there are several lifestyle factors that need to be considered.

Healthy Eating and Diabetes

Including suitable portions of a wide variety of nutritious foods is important for good health and weight. Being aware of how and what to eat can help you control your blood glucose levels, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight.

The Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults provide broad advice on healthy eating. Where possible see a dietitian for a review of your food choices and advice on meal planning suited to your medical and social circumstances.

Exercise Program

Exercise is very important in the management of diabetes. It has been clearly demonstrated that regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity and reverse insulin resistance.

Exercise is also important for weight management, stress release and lowering blood pressure. You will need to consult your GP about whether it is safe for you to take up an exercise routine if you haven’t been physically active for some time. Your GP will need to check that your heart, blood pressure and feet are able to safely tolerate the level and type of activity you are planning.

Take care of your feet with any exercise program. If you are in doubt, consult a podiatrist regarding appropriate footwear and foot care advice.

For relevant information about exercise contact an exercise physiologist or physiotherapist in your area.
