Alcohol

Moderate alcohol intake. Dietary guidelines for Australians recommend no more than two drinks per day for men and no more than one drink per day for women.

Large intakes of alcohol can contribute to high triglycerides, weight gain and poor blood glucose control. If consumed on an empty stomach alcohol can cause low blood glucose particularly if you are taking insulin or certain diabetes tablets. Moderate intakes (1 - 2 glasses) of alcohol are acceptable. Alcohol should always be taken in combination with carbohydrates or a meal. Reduced alcohol beers, dry wines and spirits mixed with low calorie beverages are the best choices.
